Sanjay Devdas
Sanjay came to the University of Akron in 1992 after earning his B.S. at
Mithibai College, Mumbai, India. He earned his M.S. in 1994 and continued
in the U. of Akron Chemical Physics program, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1999
under the guidance of Prof. Robert Mallik.
After graduation, he took a Postdoctoral
position at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth,
where he studied FTIR of novel
germanium clusters formed by laser ablation and
trapped in a solid argon matrix.
In 2001, he was employed as a Senior Development
Scientist in the Optical Fiber Division at Corning,
Inc.
He is currently part of a team that is involved in
innovating and optimizing the manufacture of specialty
optical fibers for use in Fiber Gain Amplifier
Modules. He is also involved in the incorporation of
laser spectroscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy into
the industrial environment.
Corning, Inc.
is a highly diverse company which
manufactures, among other things, catalytic converter products for
automotive and industrial use, liquid crystal display
products, DNA microarray technology, laboratory
products, lighting products, optical fiber, photonic
materials and precision optical components using HPFS
(High Purity Fused Silica).
Sanjay says, "I learned a lot of experimental skills working on my
project at the University of Akron, viz. IETS and FTIR. Some of the
useful courses I took were Quantum Mechanics (I
actually get to apply some QM principles in my job),
EMT courses, optics and also courses I took as part of
my Ph.D. in the Chemical Physics program, such as
Chemical kinetics and Organometallics."
